Di Kent, a short-haired man wearing glasses and a blue shirt is smiling while holding a bouquet of flowers.

Hi, I'm Di Kent

I graduated with a Master’s of Applied Statistics and a degree in Statistical Computing and Operations Research.

In February 2023, I started my first job at Parexel as a Statistical Programmer I.

What is it like to work as a Statistical Programmer?

As a Statistical Programmer, my day usually kicks off with a thorough review of project requirements and timelines. I begin by checking emails and updates from my team to stay informed about any new developments or changes in the study protocols. Grasping the specific data needs for ongoing clinical trials is essential, as it lays the groundwork for my work.

Throughout the day, I immerse myself in writing and validating code, primarily using programming languages like SAS. My focus is on developing the Study Data Tabulation Model (SDTM), Analysis Data Model (ADaM), and Tables, Figures, and Listings (TFLs) for analysis, ensuring that our data is accurate and ready for interpretation.

What are the departments/positions GDO team collaborating with most frequently?

Statistical Programmers work closely with both the Biostatistics and Clinical Data Management (CDA) teams. Collaboration with Biostatistics is particularly crucial, as biostatisticians provide the statistical methodologies and guidance necessary for our analyses. We ensure that our programming aligns with their statistical plans to achieve accurate results. In terms of Data Management, this team plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the data collected during clinical trials. We collaborate to clean and prepare datasets for analysis, making sure everything is in order before we proceed.

Can you share the Career Development chances in clinical operation team? How has Parexel supported your career growth?

Senior Statistical Programmers can advance into managerial roles. Additionally, Parexel actively supports career growth both within the department and across various functions such as biostatistics and CDA.

What kind of advice you’d give to people who’d like to join SP team as a management level?

It’s important to focus on enhancing both your leadership and communication abilities, as being able to motivate and guide a team is just as crucial as having technical knowledge. Additionally, gaining diverse experience is essential; seek opportunities to work on various projects and collaborate with different departments. This approach will provide you with a broader perspective on the clinical trial process and help you understand how different teams operate.

What do you enjoy outside of work? What is something most people don't know about you that would surprise them?

I truly love playing both chess and tennis, as each game offers a unique blend of mental and physical challenges.

CRO is a team of experts ensuring new medications are safe and effective before they hit the market. We work closely with pharmaceutical and biotech companies to run clinical trials, making sure that new treatments are safe and effective before they hit the market. Our team of experts gathers and analyzes data from trial participants, which helps researchers figure out how well a treatment works and spot any potential side effects. By maintaining high standards and compliance, CROs play a crucial role in advancing medical research and enhancing patient care.

Can you help to introduce how does SP team functions in the clinical research cycle?

As a Statistical Programmer, I analyze data from clinical trials using statistical methods to summarize the information into tables, figures, and listings. This helps interpret the results and assists researchers in understanding treatment effectiveness and potential side effects.

On a typical day, I collaborate with biostatisticians, data managers, and clinical teams to ensure our analyses are accurate and meet regulatory standards. This dynamic environment allows us to contribute to important research that improves patient care.

How is Parexel/CRO industry different from the other industry/positions you had worked with?

In the clinical research cycle, the Statistical Programming team plays a vital role. Once we collect data from trial participants, we jump in to analyze it. Using statistical methods, we help researchers figure out how effective a treatment is and if there are any side effects.
Our work is crucial for creating the reports that guide decision-making and meet regulatory requirements. By working closely with the clinical operations team, we make sure the data we analyze is accurate and aligns with the trial's goals. This collaboration ultimately supports the development of safe and effective treatments.

What do you think is the most attractive part of Parexel and CRO industry? What have you experienced at Parexel but not anywhere else?
